Affirming Support

I’m feeling so excited over these birth affirmations I just designed for my client who is due any day now.

Typically when I am supporting a family, I ask them to review a number of different affirmations and come up with a list of affirmations they feel connected to. Then I take the list, and design individual cards with each affirmation on it. I bring these card with me to the birth and place them all around the room and bathroom. These affirmations become mantras of a sort; affirmations we keep saying to get through each wave/surge/contraction.

I know, it may sound a little out there, but I’m telling you it works! Think about instances in your own life when you kept repeating the same phrase or sentence as you did something challenging or courageous. Sometimes those words hype you up; sometimes it gives you the strength you need just to get to the next level.

Maybe your affirmations are focused on clearing a fear or limiting belief about pregnancy or postpartum; some people think of affirmations as something that can help bring them into alignment with their body and baby. Whatever your “why” is, affirmations are a powerful tool to keep in your labor tool belt.

And well, that’s the point in labor: distraction, rest, laughter, focus, hydration, love, distraction. You do whatever you need to do to do tough things.

Most importantly, you tell yourself and your baby that you are safe. Birth teams’ jobs are to ensure that they help to co-create this safe space to welcome this amazing baby earth side. If you as the person who is in labor feels safe, then your body relaxes, your brain isn’t trying to runaway, but instead the combination of the affirmation, dim lights, kind & welcoming energy around, helps you get to the next wave/surge/contraction… and soon enough, you’ll meet your baby.
